Giving Audio-Visual Equipment Its Own Lane on the Network

A single-site congregation with weekly streamed services

The challenge

The audio and video equipment that runs weekly services and streaming shared one flat network with office work and guest wifi. Any busy Sunday put unrelated traffic in contention with the systems the service depends on, and troubleshooting meant untangling everything at once.

Where we came in

Segmentation is ordinary network practice, but it is often skipped in smaller environments because the gear already technically works. The case for doing it here was not performance in the abstract — it was that a service happens at a fixed time each week and cannot wait for a diagnosis.

What we did

  • Created a dedicated VLAN for audio-visual equipment across the existing firewall, roughly five switches and around fifteen access points
  • Configured the VLAN interface and the traffic rules governing what may cross between segments
  • Tagged the VLAN on the switch ports serving AV devices
  • Stood up a dedicated wireless network mapped to the same segment for wireless AV gear

Where it landed

  • Audio-visual traffic runs on its own segment, isolated from office and guest activity
  • The equipment behind services and streaming has dedicated bandwidth
  • Faults can be isolated to one segment rather than diagnosed across the whole network
